Video: Apple and Steve Jobs Officially Unveil iCloud. What It Does and What Apple’s Strategy Is All About

Jun 7, 2011  •  Post A Comment

"The premise behind iCloud is simple but powerful: All your information is automatically kept up to date and synchronized across all the devices you own — PCs, Macs, the iPad and the iPhone." So writes Edward C. Baig at USA Today.

Jobs’ strategy, writes Bloomberg, is no less than "another step toward sidelining the personal-computer industry he pioneered. Jobs, who helped popularize home computers with the Apple II and the Mac in the 1970s and ‘80s, is counting on the new iCloud product to let users synchronize and access data on Apple devices and Windows PCs running iTunes."

The Bloomberg story continues, "Jobs aims to make Apple the center of consumers’ digital lives, further decreasing dependence on Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s once- dominant Windows software and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ)’s market- leading PCs. With iCloud, files will be stored by Apple in remote data centers — known as the “cloud” in technology parlance — and automatically synchronize. That means the same content is available from any Apple gadget, without it cluttering up users’ hard drives."

Said Jobs, according to Bloomberg, " ‘we’re going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device — just like an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod Touch,’ Jobs, dressed in a black sweater and jeans, said [on Monday, June 6th.] ‘We’re going to move the hub of your digital life to the cloud.”

Here’s a video of Jobs’ speech at the Apple Development Conference on June 6, 2011, in San Francisco.

  1. Ironic since iTunes is antiquated software to say the least.
I would not use iCloud even on a Windows 7 system
to avoid the infection of iTunes installation.
