Chaz Bono has spoken out about the frenzy that erupted after he was announced as a contestant on the upcoming season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” ABC News reports.

Bono, a transgender activist, has polarized observers, with many critics speaking out against the selection. Bono’s response: "It’s made me realize I’m really glad I’m doing this, because America really needs to see this."

Bono, 42, is the son of singer Cher and the late Sonny Bono, and was previously known as Chastity Bono. He underwent gender transition surgery and legally changed his name last year.

As previously reported, Cher and others have come out with statements in support of Chaz.
