‘The Office’ Showrunner Explains Thinking Behind Picking the New Boss

"The Office" showrunner Paul Lieberstein tells New York Magazine’s Vulture blog why the program passed over Darryl and Dwight as possible successors to Scranton branch manager Michael Scott.

Darryl, played by Craig Robinson, "was too rational and smart to be the manager," Lieberstein noted. Dwight, played by Rainn Wilson, had the opposite problem: "We realized a lot about the character and decided that he would destroy the office."

The reason for picking Andy Bernard, played by Ed Helms, was that his character shared a trait with Michael Scott, who was played by Steve Carell: "They both put people first and relationships first," Lieberstein said.

Nevertheless, the show won’t be as focused on one character as it was with the Michael Scott character, he noted. Overall, the program will divide screen time more evenly among more characters, the story adds.
