Wednesday Ratings: NBC Sinks Deeper

With all but the last few fall premieres now out of the way, Fox, ABC and CBS all had something to cheer about in Wednesday night’s numbers, TVbytheNumbers.com reports. NBC was another matter.

The centerpiece of the night for ABC was the Emmy-winning sitcom “Modern Family,” which scored the best numbers of the night — a 5.6 average rating in the 18-49 demo and 13.2 million viewers at 9 p.m. Also good news for ABC was the series premiere of “Suburgatory” at 8:30, where the show’s 3.3 rating in 18-49 represented a 27% improvement over last fall’s premiere of “Better With You.”

For the night as a whole, Fox, with its two hours of “X Factor,” took the win in the 18-49 demo with a 3.9 average rating, ahead of ABC and CBS (3.3 averages for both) and well ahead of Univision (1.8) and NBC (1.6). In total viewers, CBS — on the strength of two franchise procedurals and a stalwart reality competition — eked out a slim win with 11.6 million to Fox’s 11.5 million, ABC’s 9.3 million, NBC’s 6.3 million and Univision’s 4.1 million.

Hour by hour, “X Factor” won 8 p.m. with the show’s two-hour average of 3.9 in the 18-49 demo. CBS’s “Survivor” led off a steady night for the network with a 3.1. ABC’s “The Middle” had a 2.6 and led into “Suburgatory” with its 3.3. NBC settled for a 2.1 for “Up All Night” and a feeble 1.0 for “Free Agents.” CW’s "H8R" trailed with a 0.6 in the 18-49 demographic for the hour.

At 9 p.m. "Modern Family" had a 5.6 and the season premiere of ABC’s "Happy Endings" notched a 3.2, both in the 18-49 demographic. CBS’s "Criminal Minds" had a solid 3.6 in the 18-49 demo for the hour, over NBC’s "Harry’s Law," which registered a 1.2, and CW’s "America’s Next Top Model" with a 0.8, both in the 18-49 demographic.

CBS’s "CSI" was tops at 10 p.m. with a 3.0 in the 18-49 demographic. ABC’s new drama "Revenge" was second with a 2.7 in the same demo, ahead of NBC’s stalwart "Law & Order: SVU," which lagged with a 2.0 in that demographic.
