After falling to third place among cable news channels, MSNBC is tweaking its prime-time lineup, bumping Lawrence O’Donnell from his 8 p.m. time slot to 10 p.m., reports Bill Carter in The New York Times’ Media Decoder blog.

"The change seems to be a concession that CNN has made a strong programming move by inserting its best-known host, Anderson Cooper, at 8 p.m.," Carter says.

MSNBC’s dominance over CNN ended after Keith Olbermann left MSNBC and Anderson Cooper started regularly beating O’Donnell, Olbermann’s time slot replacement, the story notes.

With the programming changes, "The Ed Show" will move from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m. The program is hosted by Ed Schultz, who is thought to be more intense than O’Donnell — which was also a trait of Olbermann’s while at MSNBC, the piece points out.
