Undeterred by the sudden demise of one period piece — NBC’s “The Playboy Club” — CBS is rolling the dice on another one: “The Producer,” inspired by the life of Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

CBS has ordered a script for the drama about producing a television evening news broadcast from the producer’s point of view, the story reports.

Weintraub was the subject of an HBO documentary earlier this year called "His Way."

Rick Dresser is writing and will executive produce "The Producer" for Warner Bros. Television.

Weintraub’s credits include a string of successful big-screen productions (“Ocean’s Eleven” and its sequels; “The Karate Kid”), as well as music management for stars including John Denver and Neil Diamond.

"The Producer" will be set in the past, distinguishing it from the upcoming HBO drama "More as This Story Develops," from Aaron Sorkin, which is present day. The Sorkin show deals with programming a cable news network like MSNBC.
