Eddie Murphy Dishes on His Beef With ‘SNL’ and a Possible Change in His Career Direction

Eddie Murphy revealed details about his grudge against "Saturday Night Live," on which he was a cast member from 1980 to 1984, in an interview with Rolling Stone.

"They were shitty to me on ‘Saturday Night Live’ a couple of times after I’d left the show," he said, according to the piece. "They said some shitty things. There was that David Spade sketch [in which Spade showed a picture of Murphy around the time of ‘Vampire in Brooklyn’ and said, ‘Look, children, a falling star’]. I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore."

Murphy added, “Now, I don’t have none of that," according to the piece. He has not been on the show in years and has refused to participate in retrospectives, the story notes.

Murphy, who has rarely given in-depth interviews in recent years, also talks about a possible change of direction in his career. The comedian says he has no interest in continuing to make family movies, and indicates he’s likely to to get back to doing stand-up, “eventually.” Murphy last performed stand-up comedy in the late 1980s, the story notes.

  1. Its ok Eddie, we r tired of u in bad movies. Go back to doing stand up so u can continue to survive a$$hole.

  2. I have a question for you, Eddie: what do you think your life and bank account would look like right about now if SNL hadn’t given you your break, idiot? What a waste of your energy and time that you let this eat you up all these years.

    • Eddie Murphy is thankful for that, but he felt like they betrayed him with that joke. Eddie walks away with loads of money and many successful movies because of SNL indeed, and can Spade or even SNL say the same?

  3. Well, David Spade/SNL had it right. before VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN, he is a falling star.
For the most part, his only successful films, in the past 15-20 years, have been remakes and sequels.
But I am glad to hear he wants to get back to the EM of the early-mid 80’s, Edgy & Funny.

  4. Eddie Murphy is yet another example of how talent can be their own worst enemy. He’s pissed off because SNL made jokes at his expense after he left and became a big star. It was okay when he was making the jokes about other celebrities. But I am glad he’s deciding to move away from the “family” movies because they suck worse than his repeated attempts to be an action hero in the 80’s. He’s actually a good actor – he deserved that Oscar nomination for “Dreamgirls” – and I wish he’d turn his attention in that direction because I have my doubts about how good his standup is going to be after having been away from the stage for 20+ years.
