HBO has a biopic in the works about pianist and entertainer Liberace, and an Oscar-winning actor is set to play the title role, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Michael Douglas, who won an Academy Award for his lead roll in the 1987 film “Wall Street,” will play Liberace in “Behind the Candelabra,” the story says.
The movie will focus on the relationship between Liberace and his younger lover, Scott Thorson, who will be played by Matt Damon, the story notes. It will be directed by Steven Soderbergh.
Said Soderbergh: “From the inception of this project, we’ve had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it. HBO’s fearless approach to original programming and their unparalleled ability to pull in viewers make them the perfect fit for us. Apart from my hair growing back, I couldn’t be happier.”
Douglas also has an Oscar as one of the producers of the 1975 movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” which won Best Picture.
