NBC’s "30 Rock" has tapped an Academy Award-winning actress to play the WASP-y mom of Avery Jessup-Donaghy, Jack’s wife, reports EW.com’s Inside TV blog.

The actress is Mary Steenburgen, who is known mostly for her film roles. Steenburgen won an Oscar in 1981 for “Melvin and Howard.”

Steenburgen’s character, Charlotte, is high-spirited and butts heads with Jack, played by Alec Baldwin, the story notes. She will appear when NBC brings back the comedy at midseason, although the network has yet to announce the show’s return date, the piece adds.

Steenburgen received Golden Globe nominations for her roles in “Goin’ South” (1978) and “Ragtime” (1981), and won the Golden Globe for “Melvin and Howard.” She also has an Emmy nomination, for “The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank” (1988).
