2011-12 TV Season Full of Surprises, as Shows With High Expectations Turn Out to Be Flops — and One Show With Low Expectations Is a Surprise Hit

In the current TV season the expensive shows that were expected to be hits with viewers largely turned out to be flops, while overlooked shows have become fan favorites, reports Joe Flint in the Los Angeles Times.

Those expensive, supposed hit programs include NBC’s canceled "The Playboy Club," the struggling "Pan Am" on ABC and Fox’s "Terra Nova," which may end its life on Earth this season, the story notes.

Nevertheless, this TV season is turning out to be "decent," Flint writes. The top five broadcast networks have drawn 40.2 million viewers, slightly up from a year earlier. Surprises have included hits such as CBS’s "Two Broke Girls" and ABC’s "Once Upon a Time," a modern take on fairy tales, the article points out.

The biggest surprise, though, is the reinvention of CBS’s "Two and a Half Men," with Ashton Kutcher coming in to replace Charlie Sheen after his meltdown, the story points out. After some uncertainty over whether the show would continue, the retooling has been a big success, with ratings up about 25% from last season.

  1. I can’t believe that you think the NEW Two and a Half Men is a “big success”! It’s a piece of garbage which is absolutely hated by a majority of the former Two and a Half Men fan base. Have you even watched this piece of sh*t? The only reason that most people are tuning in is out of curiosity, which is unfortunate, as it only raises its so-called viewership numbers. You can see the results for yourself by checking out forums and message boards all over the internet, including CBS’s own forum on this show (90% of which is absolutely negative).

  5. Apologies for the duplications. When trying to submit, each time I was told that I had put in the wrong information, so I presumed that it hadn’t been posted.
