The Chinese government has broken its silence about a recent scuffle between Chinese police and Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale, known for playing Batman in “The Dark Knight,” CBS News reports.

Bale clashed with police last week when he tried to visit blind activist Chen Guangcheng, who is under house arrest, as previously reported.

A Chinese government official put the onus on Bale. Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin, asked whether the incident has been embarrassing for the government, said the actor is the one who should be embarrassed.

CBS News reports: “He said Bale was invited by director Zhang Yimou to attend the opening ceremony of the film ‘The Flowers of War.’ ‘But he was not invited to create a story or shoot film in a certain village,’ said Liu. ‘I think if you want to make up news in China, you will not be welcome here.’"

Bale has said he wanted to shake Chen’s hand and let him know Chen has been an inspiration to the actor. He was turned away by authorities.

Activists say Chen, despite officially being free under the law, is confined to his home and continues to be subjected to beatings and other abuse, the story reports.
