Television this year broke ground in at least one way, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker blog. The story singles out an industry trend toward depicting gruesome deaths.

Some of the deaths were so explicit that "even viewers who are usually strong of stomach found themselves covering their eyes during several of these horrific scenes," the story reports.

Making the list of the five most gruesome TV deaths this year was AMC’s "Breaking Bad" with its "Face Off" episode, which depicted a character’s face getting blown off in an explosion, the story says.

Another horrible TV death was Viserys’ demise on HBO’s "Game of Thrones," which showed him having a cauldron of melted gold poured over his head, the piece notes.

“Boardwalk Empire,” “Dexter” and “Sons of Anarchy” also made the list, with several of the shows being cited for multiple death scenes.
