Dec 22, 2011  •  Post A Comment

Nielsen has released its list of the top ten single TV telecasts of 2011, and pro football dominates the list. Nine of the top ten programs on the list are related to NFL contests, with the only non-football broadcast on the list being ABC’s Academy Awards telecast, which came in ninth.

The top broadcast of the year, unsurprisingly, was Fox’s Super Bowl XLV telecast on Feb. 6, which earned a rating of 37.7 in persons 2+ with a whopping 111 million total viewers.

Super Bowl-related programming — all on Fox — also occupies the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 10 spots on the list, with NFL playoff programming on CBS and Fox claiming the remaining five spots in the Top 10.

Nielsen tracked regularly scheduled series separately, but no series had high enough average viewership to crack the top ten among individual telecasts. Click here for a report on the Top 10 regularly scheduled series of the year.
