After reporting former Penn State coach Joe Paterno’s death on Saturday, CBS Sports apologized, saying it had fallen "well short" of its own standards by publishing an "unsubstantiated report," reports TheWrap.com.

CBS Sports retracted its report after Paterno’s family quickly denied his death on Saturday, the story notes. The family announced the former coach’s death Sunday morning, hours after the CBS report, the piece adds.

According to the CBS Sports apology, the story "was the result of a failure to verify the original report."

According to TheWrap.com, CBS Sports had relied on a story from a Penn State student website, Onward State.

The managing editor of the student site resigned Saturday night, saying he never thought his reporting would be picked up by the national media, the story notes.

TVWeek reported Paterno’s death Sunday morning.
