New York Anchorman Accused of Rape; Accusation Is Questioned by DA

An accusation of rape against a well-known television news anchor is being met with skepticism by officials in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the New York Post reports.

WNYW-TV anchorman Greg Kelly, the son of New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, is accused of raping a woman in October 2011. But the DA is reportedly leaning toward not filing charges because of a number of problems with the allegations.

The Post reports: “The DA’s office is suspicious of the accuser for several reasons, including a three-month lag in reporting the alleged rape to police. Sources told The Post last night that the woman doesn’t remember some details of what Kelly did to her — because she was so intoxicated — but claims she knows they had sex and she didn’t consent.”

Kelly’s accuser, a law firm paralegal, alleges Kelly got her pregnant in the attack and says she subsequently got an abortion.

According to the story: “The woman claims she was attacked on Oct. 8 in a downtown office after a boozy night with the unmarried Kelly, who is the co-anchor of Fox 5’s ‘Good Day New York’ and a former U.S. Marine. She told detectives that she met him on the street and that they went out drinking at the South Street Seaport. They ended up at the Financial District law firm where she works instead of going to her apartment, because her boyfriend was there, she told cops.”

The report quotes one source saying: “It sounds like she got caught [cheating] by her boyfriend, and then he forces her hand: ‘If you’re not lying, you better report.’”

Kelly and the alleged victim reportedly communicated after the encounter, and Kelly has supplied investigators with text messages as evidence that the sex was consensual, the story reports.

One law-enforcement source said: “The fact pattern is very suspicious. … It just reeks of BS.”

Mediabistro.com reported that Kelly was removed from the early-morning newscast, replaced by Steve Lacy. Lacy told viewers about the switch, saying on air, "Fox 5 anchor Greg Kelly, the son of NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, is under investigation for allegedly raping a woman.”

Greg Kelly’s lawyer issued this statement, according to Mediabistro: "Mr. Kelly is aware that the New York County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation. Mr. Kelly strenuously denies any wrongdoing of any kind, and is cooperating fully with the district attorney’s investigation. We know the district attorney’s investigation will prove Mr. Kelly’s innocence.”
