‘Nightline’ Interview With Bitter Ex-Wife of Newt Gingrich Could Deal Setback to His Presidential Hopes

Newt Gingrich’s campaign team is bracing for the worst as ABC’s “Nightline” prepares to air an interview with his ex-wife, the New York Post reports.

Marianne Gingrich, who is described as “bitter,” has reportedly threatened to derail her ex-husband’s presidential hopes. She has already taped the interview, which is scheduled to air tonight — the same night as a key debate in the runup to Gingrich’s South Carolina primary showdown with fellow GOP candidate Mitt Romney, the story reports.

Marianne Gingrich, who divorced Gingrich in 1999, spoke with ABC’s Brian Ross. She married Gingrich in 1981, just months after he had left his first wife, according to the story. He then left Marianne for congressional aide Callista Bisek, who is 23 years younger than him, and married her in August 2000, the piece notes.

Gingrich’s spokesman released a letter written to ABC News management from his daughters, which read that Gingrich "has said before, privately and publicly, that he regrets any pain he may have caused in the past to people he loves.”

Among the revelations contained in the interview, according to a preview clip, is the claim that Newt Gingrich wanted an open marriage and asked Marianne Gingrich to remain married to him while he had an affair with Callista.

Gingrich did get some good news this week, as he received the endorsement of Rick Perry as Perry dropped out of the presidential race.

  1. Shazam, Newt got an endorsement from Gomer Perry.
Well golly, that’s one hell of an endorsement.
    Makes ya sick

  2. Considering how many president’s, at least from Thomas Jefferson down through Eisenhower, Kennedy and Clinton, have had affairs, and how good a job most of them did, I really don’t give a rat’s behind what they do in their private lives. None of their extra-marital activity has effected the type of job they did. If Gingrich had an affair 10 years ago it won’t affect how good a job he would do now. And if Obama has an affair, I don’t really care as long as he keeps his private life private and it doesn’t effect how he rules

  3. Presidents don’t rule. They govern… along with Congress. The supreme Court interprets laws and determines their constitutionality.
    “Rules…”. REALLY?
And by the way – leave the apostrophe out of plurals, Rick Perry!!!

  4. The key thing is the hypocrisy. He portrays himself as a socially conservative Republican, but what sort of social conservative would ask his wife for an open marriage? Actions, as they say, speak much louder than words.

  5. And media “hit” pieces speak louder than actions. What does she say that she didn’t already say in a 2010 interview? Hint: Nothing. So we learn that Gingrich is just as morally bankrupt as Clinton, with the main difference that the latter was duplicitous and disbarred. Meanwhile, the empty suit in the White House steers the country toward the rocks.

  6. Who cares what a bitter, resentful ex-wife says from over 12 years ago. Most ex wives will at a minimum stretch the truth and/or down right lie about ex husbands. She will say just about anything to get center stage publicity, money and revenge. The liberal media is just using her as a pon for their agenda. But I have to say thanks for helping Newt win in SC. This will put him over the top.
