In the wake of the sudden ouster by OWN of executive VP of production and development Lisa Erspamer, which we reported earlier today, OWN is bringing in a veteran Discovery exec to help out on an interim basis.

The struggling channel, which is co-owned by Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications, is turning to Rita Mullin, a 16-year veteran of Discovery, Deadline.com reports.

According to the story: “Mullin, currently SVP of Content Strategy for Discovery Fit & Health, will work with OWN’s team on programming and development while continuing in her role at Discovery Fit & Health. OWN’s programming is being overseen by network president Sheri Salata and Winfrey.”

The report says Mullin’s “extensive series and cable network experience” is something that OWN has been lacking among its executive team.

Mullin previously led TLC’s East Coast development team, where she had a hand in bringing some of the network’s highest-rated series to life, including "Jon & Kate Plus 8," "19 Kids and Counting" and "Sister Wives."

Before her stint at TLC, Mullin was VP of development for the Discovery Health Channel, which later transformed into OWN. Mullin’s current channel, Discovery Fit & Health, was created as part of the takeover of Discovery Health by OWN.

  1. How ironic now that Rita Mullen, the former development head of Discovery Health, the channel that Discovery CEO David Zaslav killed to make room for OWN, is now coming in to save OWN.
