Ricky Gervais, Sharpening His Fangs for Another Round of Hollywood Bashing at Sunday’s Golden Globes, Reveals What’s Behind His Grudge With Celebrities

With his highly anticipated return as host of the Golden Globe Awards just a few days away, Ricky Gervais is opening up about what’s behind his apparent anger toward Hollywood and celebrities, The Huffington Post reports.

Gervais said in a new interview with Esquire that his stance has its roots in populism and religious attitudes, the story says.

"Let’s get this in perspective,” Gervais said of celebrities. “They’re the wealthiest, most privileged people in the world. Imagine if I had gone out there and said, ‘We’re all in the same gang. Aren’t we brilliant? Us millionaires together.’"

Gervais also talked about his attention-getting line about religion at last year’s ceremony, where he closed with: "Thank you to God that I’m an atheist." According to Gervais, it was about narcissism, and he named names.

"It was a swipe at all those people who thank God because they won an award," Gervais said. "How arrogant is that? There’s war and famine and God’s going, ‘Know what Bullock? Write a speech. I’m not going to say anything, Sandra, but write a speech. That’s all I’m saying.’"
