TV Chef Paula Deen Under Fire After Diabetes Revelation

Jan 18, 2012  •  Post A Comment

After television chef Paula Deen revealed her diabetes diagnosis this week, some are questioning her motives for revealing the illness while profiting from an endorsement deal from a pharmaceutical company that makes a diabetes medication, reports The New York Times.

Deen, a Food Network star, said she received the diagnosis three years ago, prompting some to criticize her for keeping her illness hidden for so long, the story notes.

Others say Deen is being hypocritical by deciding to profit from a disease they believe she helped bring on herself through her gooey, butter-laden concoctions, the story says.

One woman wrote on Facebook, "Sorry Paula. I think you hid the disease because the network thought people would dump your show.”

As reported previously, Deen has had a long-running feud with rival TV chef Anthony Bourdain, who has been featured on Bravo and Travel Channel. Bourdain has called Deen “the most dangerous person in America,” and he expressed little sympathy for Deen this week after she revealed her diagnosis.

  1. You can totally discount Anthony Bourdain’s comments. That poor, pitiful excuse of cook (not even a chef) has been jealous of Paula Deen for a long while. To other people who chastise her for not revealing it earlier I’d ask the question, “When was the right time to reveal it?”. She did what she felt was right for her. If someone is “offended” she didn’t reveal the diabetes on “your” time schedule, then stop watching her. She didn’t have to ever reveal it. Get a life.

  2. Since when are celebrities required to disclose every health ailment to the public? It’s not “hiding” anything, it’s private information!
There’s nothing wrong with Deen’s recipes as long as they’re enjoyed in moderation, this is just another example of people getting enjoyment in their lives by tearing down others.
How pathetically sad – and no, I’ve never even seen Deen’s show.

  3. This overbearing fat cow has been gorging (and getting others to do the same) on fat and sugar and now the chickens have come home to roost. Bourdain is correct in his assessment of this smarmy dame. The sooner she leaves TV the better the Vast Wasteland will be!

  4. I agree with the above response–she’s a danger to society with her fat-filled concoctions and her slimy good-timey southin’ drawl. Remember when they made a big deal about her marrying the fat fool who took her for her $$ and not for love? He revealed that in the Nat’l Enquirer! She’s a lousy cook and an obnoxious host for a food show. Give me Guy Fieri anyday!
