USA is breaking with its tradition of lighter programming such as “Psych” and “Burn Notice,” giving the green light to a new miniseries about the lives of a former first family, TVLine reports.

The new show, “Political Animals,” comes from Greg Berlanti, executive producer of the ABC drama "Brothers & Sisters," and depicts a family in turmoil, the story says.

The plot of the six-hours miniseries focuses on a divorced woman, the U.S. Secretary of State, who was formerly the first lady. Elaine Barrish has to deal with her family issues at the same time that the State Department is engulfed in an international crisis. Barrish is helped in her balancing act by a former rival, a famous Washington political journalist.

Said USA Network co-President Jeff Wachtel: “We’ve been chasing Greg for years. We can’t think of a better partner to be working with as we expand the storytelling reach of the network.”
