Video: Ellen Fires Back at Group Protesting Her Endorsement Deal

Feb 8, 2012  •  Post A Comment

Daytime host Ellen DeGeneres used her talk show Tuesday to respond to a protest of her endorsement deal with JC Penney, The Washington Post reported.

DeGeneres fired back at the group One Million Moms, which is trying to pressure JC Penney to drop DeGeneres as a spokesperson because she is gay.

DeGeneres told her viewers: “Normally I try not to pay attention to my haters, but this time I’d like to talk about it ’cuz my haters are my motivators. This organization doesn’t think that I should be the spokesperson because I’m gay. For those of you who are just tuning in for the first time, it’s true. I’m gay. I hope you were sitting down.”

She also cheered the appeals court ruling the same day overturning California’s ban on gay marriage, which we reported previously.

JC Penney is standing behind its choice of DeGeneres as its spokesperson, the story notes.

Here’s the video of DeGeneres’ comments on the subject on her show:

  1. Hopefully JC Penny will stand its ground. These interest groups need to be ignored in order for them to go away. The average person doesn’t care what you do in the privacy of your own home and bedroom.

  2. I really do not think it’s about what someone does in their bedroom. It’s about us knowing what they do by their own admissions and by many others in …. yes…. MY OWN community. Yes I am gay.
I clearly see the other side of what the Parent’s group is saying. Point being… It’s not staying in the Bedroom or their private home. I personally find it disgusting that we need to know who does what with whom and what my own “gay” community pushes on others, that isn’t even their business, in the first place.
The parent’s group is correct in saying that they feel. I TOTALLY agree with them, as I stand up to the ills of my own community. Then again, I am the only one who has balls enough to do that.

  3. So, when we see a straight couple, holding hands, carrying kids – you don’t know what they do in the bedroom? Is their straightness being “pushed” on us?
And Ellen isn’t being used as a “gay spokesperson”, she’s being used as a “spokesperson”. The ONLY people focusing on her sexuality is the group. They are literally saying “We don’t want any gay spokes people because gays are offensive to us.” As a straight person, THAT offends ME!

  4. Incorrect, she did say to the audience she was gay. If it really didn’t matter to either party involved, this wouldn’t have even been brought up. After all, we don’t have people telling us they are straight. Why does it have to be this way for the gays. Have the 60’s not taught anyone anything… people should be people. What they do in their won bedrooms, is thier own business. We don’t need people saying… like I heard in a hall this last week….”Hunny a woman won’t stop me from gettin’ that married man.” Like I, or anyone else, needed to hear that in the public halls of our workplace. And as a gay person, most gays are also offensive to me. I know several gay people saying the same thing… flamers ruin it for everyone. Yes, even Mr. Ellen.
