Los Angeles is losing ground at a rapid pace to two other cities in the production of drama pilots for television, Deadline.com reports.

New York and Vancouver are becoming the locations of choice. New York has a record 11 drama pilots shooting this season for broadcast television, up from nine last year and none the previous year, the story reports.

The story says New York state’s expansion of its Film Production Tax Credit Program, passed in August 2010, has a lot to do with the surge. This year New York passed L.A. for the first time in the number of broadcast drama pilot shoots.

Also passing L.A. was Vancouver, with nine pilot shoots, double the 4.5 figure for last year — which includes a split production for “Alcatraz” between Vancouver and San Francisco. Los Angeles fell to third place with eight of the 41 total drama pilots shot.

The story notes that the currency exchange rate changed slightly to favor Canadian production. A total of 11 broadcast pilots shot in Canada, including the nine in Vancouver and one apiece in Toronto and Montreal.

Meanwhile, the pilot for NBC’s “Frontier” is shooting in Australia, the report notes.
