On a Night of Lowlights in the Broadcast Ratings, One Show Goes Out With a Resounding Thud

Monday’s Nielsen overnights saw a number of shows turning in season lows or series lows, but one series had an especially bad night, according to TVbytheNumbers.com.

Fox’s two-hour season finale of “Alcatraz” went over with a resounding thud, slipping to a series-low 1.5 average rating in adults 18-49 to knock Fox down to fifth place for prime time overall.

NBC’s “The Voice” was down too, but still lifted the network to a win for the night. NBC averaged a 3.7 rating for prime time in the 18-49 demo, topping ABC (2.9 average), CBS (1.9), Univision (1.5) and Fox (1.5).

ABC, led by “Dancing With the Stars,” came out on top for the night in total viewers, averaging 15.8 million to 10.0 million for NBC, 6.4 million for CBS, 4.7 million for Fox and 3.7 million for Univision.

NBC’s two-hour “The Voice” hit a season low, falling 4% from a week ago to a 4.4 average in 18-49. The network’s “Smash” matched last week’s season low with a 2.2.

“Dancing With the Stars,” off to a slow start this season, saw its second episode of the season fall 11% from the premiere to a 3.1 in 18-49. But ABC also had one of the few bright spots across the broadcast dial, with “Castle” posting a gain of 4% with a 2.4 rating.

The generally low numbers on the other networks came on a night when CBS aired all repeats — a point that looks especially bad for “Alcatraz” as it waits to hear whether it will get a second season.

  1. That’s to bad because Alcatraz is a really good show. I just think FOX made a mistake by pushing it back to mid-season instead of the fall. Plus double running many of the episodes, including the premiere. A two hour show is a big investment for a viewer. I would be interested to see the DVR returns, or what the ratings are for the Saturday nite replays…To everyone involved in Alcatraz a big THANK YOU!!! Also remember that getting canceled does not mean failure.
