The changing of the guard in digital media use is on pace to occur this year, according to new research. Online movie streaming will exceed digital video disc and Blu-ray usage for the first time ever, Bloomberg reports, citing researcher IHS Screen Digest.

While legal online streaming of films will more than double to 3.4 billion this year, viewing from physical discs will shrink to 2.4 billion from 2.6 billion, the story notes.

The online growth comes as unlimited-streaming subscription plans grow in popularity, such as those offered by Netflix and Amazon.com’s Prime service, the piece notes. Indeed, such services account for 94% of all paid online movie viewings in the U.S., according to the story.

“We are looking at the beginning of the end of the age of movies on physical media like DVD and Blu-ray,” IHS senior principal analyst Dan Cryan said in a statement.
