Reversing a decade-long ratings decline, the broadcast news divisions of ABC, CBS and NBC added viewers in 2011, according to The Hollywood Reporter, citing the Project for Excellence in Journalism’s State of the Media report.

Total viewership across the three networks increased by almost 1 million viewers to 22.5 million, or a gain of 4.5% across the three broadcasters, the piece says. All three added viewers in the target demographic of viewers 25 to 54, as well.

As for cable news, CNN posted the largest gains in prime time last year, with 16% more viewers, while MSNBC increased its prime-time audience by 3%.

Fox News, however, was down in both prime time and daytime for the second consecutive year, the piece adds. Primetime viewership dipped 3% to an average audience of 1.9 million, while daytime slipped 2% to 1.1 million on the News Corp.-owned network, the story says.
