The cast of a wildly successful comedy series is asking for massive pay hikes — with their pay tripling to $200,000 each per episode, up from a reported $65,000 currently — as high-stakes negotiations begin with the show’s six adult cast members, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cast members on ABC’s “Modern Family” who are negotiating for the higher salaries are Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara, the story notes.

Ed O’Neill, who plays the patriarch of the family, makes about $105,000 per episode, as well as a small backend for agreeing to cut his quote when he signed on for the series in 2009, the piece notes. O’Neill was considered a coup when he was cast, given his success on "Married … With Children" and other TV shows, according to the article.

It’s likely that the negotiations could get ugly, as the cast is expected to seek additional pay increases for subsequent seasons, a move that producer Twentieth Television will probably resist, the article notes.
