‘GMA’ vs. ‘Today’ in Closely Watched Ratings Fight — Did ABC’s Couric Finally Beat Her Old NBC Show?

In the high-stakes battle for morning ratings supremacy between NBC’s “Today” and ABC’s “Good Morning America,” a crack finally appeared Wednesday in the NBC show’s armor. “GMA,” with former “Today” star Katie Couric as guest host, beat “Today” in total viewers, Deadline.com reports.

While Ryan Seacrest was on "Today" announcing he will be part of NBC’s upcoming summer Olympic coverage, "Good Morning America" won the ratings battle thanks to day three of Couric guest-hosting for Robin Roberts. "GMA" had 5.236 million total viewers, to "Today’s" 5.149 million, the story reports.

However, in the 25-54 demographic, "Today" beat "GMA" with 2.25 million viewers to 1.93 million.

“GMA” is trying to unseat “Today” as No. 1 in the morning daypart for the week after a historic run for the NBC show. As reported previously, “Today” has come out on top for more than 16 years — the longest winning streak in TV history.


  1. So it took Ryan Seacrest appearing on the Today Show to give Good Morning America the ratings win. I guess people thing Seacrest is a bigger d-bag than Couric.

  2. Total viewers? Who cares about Total Viewers? Do Total Viewers go to the market en masse and buy groceries? Do Total Viewers go to Macy’s for their One Day Sale? Do Total Viewers descend upon the nearest car dealer to shop for their next new car?
    I mean, just think about this for a moment, please and then get back to me.
    According to these numbers, Today had a 16.6% demo margin over GMA. Looks pretty good to me.
