A high-profile drama series in the works at USA Network has added an Academy Award winner to the already solid lineup, TVLine.com reports.

Joining the series “Political Animals” is Ellen Burstyn, who won an Oscar for her lead role in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” in 1975. Burstyn has been nominated for a total of six Academy Awards, and won an Emmy in 2009 for a guest appearance on “Law & Order: SVU.”

Burstyn will play Margaret Barrish, the mother of Secretary of State Elaine Barrish, who will be played by Sigourney Weaver, the story says.

Burstyn’s character is described as having a sharp tongue and keen wit, a former Vegas showgirl who is "the first one to open a bottle of booze to help her daughter through a political evening," according to the article.

The six-episode series, set to premiere this summer, is from exec producers Greg Berlanti (“Dirty Sexy Money”) and Laurence Mark (“Jerry Maguire”), the story notes.

The report adds: “As previously announced, the cast also includes ‘Lone Star‘s’ James Wolk and ‘Gossip Girl‘s’ Sebastian Stan as polar-opposite twin brothers, Brittany Ishibashi (‘Ghostfacers’) as Wolk’s fiancee, Carla Gugino (‘Entourage’) as a journalist hellbent on destroying Barrish’s career, and Ciaran Hinds (‘Rome’) as a jovial former president (and Elaine’s ex-husband).”
