Director David Cronenberg’s first television venture will star an Oscar-nominated actor who built his resume on film roles, TheWrap.com reports.

The actor is Tim Roth, who recently focused on television as Cal Lightman in the series "Lie to Me."

Called "Knifeman," the new series will feature Roth as John Tattersall, described as a "radical, self-educated surgeon" who seeks to discover the human body’s secrets.

Cronenberg will direct and executive produce the pilot, which is based on the Wendy Moore book "The Knife Man."

Roth received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in “Rob Roy,” and is known for his work in feature films including “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Planet of the Apes” and “The Incredible Hulk.”
