Phillip Phillips, the winner of the most recent season of "American Idol," underwent a six-hour operation, with his medical condition worse than anyone had thought before the surgery, reports TMZ.com.

Phillips had the surgery for what the story calls "massive kidney stones." During the surgery, it was found that a stint that had been placed earlier in his kidney had remained inside too long and had become embedded, according to the piece. Surgeons had to remove the stint with a laser.

The surgery was successful and Phillips is hoping to be fully recovered by July 6, when the "Idol" tour officially starts in Detroit.
