Audience Shrinks — by a Lot — for Daytime Emmys After Move to Cable

The Daytime Emmys’ move from broadcast to cable produced what many observers would consider a predictable result: The audience got smaller.

The 39th Daytime Emmy Awards drew 912,000 viewers on HLN on Saturday night, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It was the first time the show aired on cable after years of broadcast coverage. Last year the Daytime Emmys drew 5.5 million viewers on CBS.

This year the top broadcasters declined to air the show, and until HLN decided to pick it up it was thought the program would end up streaming online, the story notes.

Despite the relatively small number in comparison with broadcast results, the show was HLN’s most-watched regularly scheduled non-news broadcast in the network’s history. Including all five broadcasts of the Daytime Emmys, 2 million viewers tuned in, the piece adds.
