A fashion designer who earned an Emmy for his glamorous, big-shouldered designs on the television show "Dynasty" has died, The New York Times reports. Nolan Miller was 79.

Miller was told he had lung cancer six years ago, the story says. Actress Joan Collins, who played Alexis Carrington Colby on the show, confirmed his death in a statement.

Miller was given a weekly wardrobe budget of $35,000, and he designed about 3,000 outfits for the drama, which ran from 1981 to 1989. He worked with producer Aaron Spelling for most of his career, helping to set the look of Spelling’s shows, according to the article.

The designer won an Emmy in 1984 for his "Dynasty" creations, and spurred a trend toward shoulder pads during the 1980s, the piece notes. He designed costumes for more than a dozen other series, including "The Love Boat" and "Charlie’s Angels," and for at least 40 movies.

The long black "cobweb" gown worn by Carolyn Jones as Morticia Addams on "The Addams Family" was designed by Miller, while Tina Louise’s Ginger wore a Miller dress when she was shipwrecked on "Gilligan’s Island," the piece notes.
