An NBC series will be joined by an Academy Award-winning actress, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker. NBC’s "Smash" has cast Jennifer Hudson in a multi-episode arc for the show’s second season, the story reports.

Hudson, who first gained attention when she competed in the third season of "American Idol," will be joining star Katherine McPhee, who competed in “Idol’s” fifth season.

Hudson, who won an Oscar for her film debut in "Dreamgirls," will portray Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning stage actress who gets involved with the players of "Bombshell," the fictional Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe that’s portrayed in the TV show.
