An actress whose idiosyncratic career included receiving an Oscar nomination for her performance in John Huston’s 1972 film "Fat City" has died in Austin, Texas, reports People magazine. Susan Tyrrell was 67.

Tyrrell played Carroll Baker’s in-law in Andy Warhol’s "Bad" (1977), and portrayed a lesbian in 1984’s "Angel" and the sequel "Avenging Angel." She was Johnny Depp’s grandmother Ramona Ricketts in John Waters’ "Cry-Baby" in 1990.

On television, she appeared in "Baretta," "Starsky and Hutch" and "Kojak," among other series.

Tyrrell was born Susan Jillian Creamer in San Francisco, the daughter of a William Morris agent. In 2000, Tyrrell had medical issues cause by a rare blood disease, essential thrombocytosis, and had to have both of her legs amputated. She continued to work even after the amputation, including appearing in the offbeat 2003 Bob Dylan movie “Masked and Anonymous.”

On Tyrrell’s tour-de-force performance in “Fat City,” the story reports: “In the John Huston boxing drama, which also starred Jeff Bridges and Stacy Keach, Tyrell, then 26, played Oma, a falling-down drunk. She later said that although Huston wanted to cast Faye Dunaway in the role, Tyrrell convinced the director to give her the job because a 26-year-old drunk would be more interesting than a 35-year-old one.”
