A top development executive with the cable channel Syfy has been hired by New Regency to lead its return to television, reports Deadline.com.

Andrew Plotkin most recently was senior vice president of original programming for Syfy, informing the channel in March that he planned to leave in June to pursue other opportunities. He was at Syfy since 2009.

New Regency is returning to TV after shutting down Regency Television, a co-venture with Fox TV Studios, five years ago, the story says. Regency produced series such as "Malcolm in the Middle" and "The Bernie Mac Show."

Plotkin will report to CEO Brad Weston and oversee original television production, co-finance, and domestic and international distribution activities.
