A U.S. TV series has earned the distinction of being declared the most popular television show in the world. At the 52nd Festival de Television de Monte Carlo Golden Nymphs, the winner in the category of "International Television Audience Award for a Drama Series" was CBS’s "CSI," reports DigitalSpy.com.

The award is based on Eurodata TV Worldwide information based on the Nielsen ratings for 2011 on five continents.

In Monaco Thursday, the current star of the show, Ted Danson, accepted the award for the program. This is the fifth time that "CSI" has won the award in seven years.

"CSI" has produced two spinoff series, "CSI: Miami" and "CSI: New York." "CSI" and "CSI: New York" have been renewed for another season, but "CSI: Miami" has ended its run.
