Chick-fil-A Pulls Jim Henson Toys Over ‘Safety Issue’ Amid Dispute Over Restaurant’s Anti-Gay Stance

One day after the Jim Henson Company severed ties with fast-food chain Chick-fil-A in protest of anti-gay-marriage comments by the restaurant’s CEO, as previously reported, Chick-fil-A has pulled all Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Puppet Kids Meal toys from its outlets, the New York Daily News reports.

The restaurant chain appears to be characterizing the timing of the move as a coincidence, saying the toys were pulled because of a “safety issue.”

“The recall was purportedly in effect as of July 19 — a day before the Jim Henson Company announced that it would end its partnerships with Chick-fil-A over its president’s anti-gay marriage statements,” the story reports.

Signs placed in the restaurants included the statement: “There have been some reports of children getting their fingers stuck in the holes of the puppets.”

The report notes: “On July 20, the Jim Henson Company said in a statement that it would no longer partner with Chick-fil-A and had donated its payment from the puppet kit promotion to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.”

Chick-fil-A President and CEO Dan Cathy sparked a firestorm with recent comments against gay marriage, telling the Baptist Press that the company is “guilty as charged” in its support for “the biblical definition of the family unit.”

The report adds: “Chick-fil-A has donated millions of dollars to groups such as the Marriage & Family Foundation and the Family Research Council, which oppose the legalization of gay marriage.”
