Colorado Shooting Suspect Sent Drawings of Massacre to Psychiatrist Before the Theater Rampage

The suspect in the shooting rampage early Friday in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater that left 12 people dead mailed a notebook containing drawings of a massacre to a University of Colorado psychiatrist, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The package went unopened until after the attack, a law-enforcement official said.

James Holmes, 24, a Ph.D. student at the university, appeared in court Monday, appearing dazed and showing his red-orange-dyed hair. Formal charges are expected to be filed against him July 30, with prosecutors reportedly contemplating pursuing the death penalty.

“After Friday’s attack, authorities discovered an unopened package in the mailroom at the University of Colorado that was mailed from Mr. Holmes to a psychiatrist, according to the law-enforcement official,” the story reports. “The drawings in the notebook apparently represented Mr. Holmes’ plans, the official said.”

Other details about the notebook were not disclosed. The story notes that the court has issued a gag order in the case, limiting the information that is released by authorities.

  1. Why did Holmes send the notebook in the first place? Was it a cry for help, a way to see if anyone really actually cared, to assuage his foreboding sense of guilt or just a way to find someone to convince him that there had to be a better way to deal with the crises that he was almost certainly aware he was living?
On the flip it may have been a capricious attempt to unsettle and taunt those at the school of what he had in mind….
