Actress Kirstie Alley, an Emmy winner from her time on the classic NBC sitcom "Cheers," has been named in a lawsuit that claims she falsely promoted a weight-loss program that didn’t work, reports TheWrap.com.

Marina Abramyan filed a suit in Los Angeles Superior Court last Friday alleging that Alley’s Organic Liaison Weight Loss Program did not live up to its claims.

Abramyan’s suit alleges that Alley and the weight loss program made "false and misleading advertising claims that the Organic Liaison Weight Loss Program can cause significant weight loss. Indeed, the advertising and marketing for the Organic Liaison Weight Loss Program creates the uniform, false net-impression that the product is an FDA approved weight loss product capable of easily causing significant weight loss and caused Defendant Kirstie Alley to lose a whopping 100 pounds."

The company’s website, says Abramyan, declares that Alley lost 100 pounds on Organic Liaison. On the site, it also says, "I [Kirstie Alley] can assure you that if you follow this program, you’ll get healthier, lose weight and not be ‘annoyingly’ hungry."

The suit goes on to state, "Ms. Alley’s weight loss is not due to the Organic Liaison Program, but rather, is the result of an above average exercise regimen and extremely low calorie diet, including her time on the television program ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ where she spent five to seven hours a day exercising as part of the competition."

Alley was previously a spokesperson for another weight-loss program, Jenny Craig. She won an Emmy in 1991 for “Cheers,” one of five nominations she received for the show, and received another Emmy for CBS’s “David’s Mother” in 1994.

  1. This lawsuit is perfect example of why we need a “Loser Pays” system. Anyone can sue anyone else for anything. Yet the sued person has the potential of running up huge lawyer’s fees when even though they win the case. If this Marina Abramyan wins, she will ask for money, PLUS her lawyer’s fees. If Alley wins, she still has to pay her lawyer’s fees. So Alley will lose even if she wins. This just isn’t fair.
