Proud as a Peacock: NBC Pulls Off a Ratings Achievement It Hasn’t Accomplished in Nine Years

NBC is marking a ratings achievement that it just pulled off for the first time in nine years: The Peacock Network won the ratings battle during premiere week in the key demographic of viewers 18-49, TVLine.com reports.

The network had a big advantage over its broadcast rivals with perennial ratings juggernaut “Sunday Night Football,” but it also got a strong performance from “Revolution,” the season’s top-rated rookie drama, along with good numbers for two installments of “The Voice.”

Also contributing to the cause was Matthew Perry’s “Go On,” the season’s No. 2 new comedy, behind ABC’s “The Neighbors.”

The last time NBC won premiere week in viewers 18-49 was in 2003.

“NBC was also the only broadcast network to improve its 18-49 rating year-over-year, rising 12 percent to an average of 2.9. ABC (averaging 2.2), CBS (2.4) and Fox (2.6) all experienced declines of at least 20 percent,” the report notes. “Of course, NBC is delivering that demo while placing No. 3 in total viewers, and far, far behind most-watched CBS.”

CBS led total viewers with a prime-time average of 10.7 million, followed by ABC with 8.3 milliion, NBC with 8.2 million and Fox with 6.9 million. NBC was the only network to post a gain, rising 9% from last year’s premiere week average of 7.5 million. The other three networks were generally down about 15%, the story reports.

“CBS boasted the two most-watched newbies (in ‘Vegas’ and ‘Elementary’), while ABC’s ‘Last Resort’ placed a distant third,” the report notes. “In the 18-49 demo, ‘Elementary,’ ‘Go On,’ ‘Vegas’ and CBS’s ‘Partners’ rounded out the Top 5, trailing ‘Revolution.’”

Among all programs, ABC’s “Modern Family” (5.5) and CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” (5.0) topped the rankings among sitcoms in the 18-49 demo. Top dramas were ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” (4.4), CBS’s “NCIS” (4.1) and ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” (3.9).
