One of the regulars from the original “Star Trek” series is returning to the network that aired the series, EW.com’s Inside TV reports. Joining the new NBC sitcom "The New Normal" is George Takei, who played Sulu on NBC’s “Star Trek” in the 1960s.

Takei, an active proponent of gay rights, will play himself on the show. “The New Normal” tracks a male gay couple as they have a baby via a surrogate.

The series has also added Nicole Richie, who will also play herself. "The New Normal" delivered 5.2 million viewers last week.

Takei also appeared as Sulu in a series of “Star Trek” feature films.

  1. Don’t forget that he was in Heros too. There was a scene in the first season where Takei’s character (Hiro Nakamura’s father) was getting into a limo, and as he walked past the back of the car, you could see the license plate number: NCC 1701.
