NBC Gives Early Renewals to Three New Series

After some ratings success at the start of the new television season, NBC quickly renewed three new shows Tuesday: the drama "Revolution" and the comedies "Go On" and "The New Normal," reports Bill Carter in The New York Times’ Media Decoder.

"The orders are especially early, well before the fall season competition generally settles in; but NBC has had so little success in prime time lately that it needs to show some confidence in its new entries," Carter writes.

With entertainment executives Bob Greenblatt and Jennifer Salke responsible for picking this season’s shows, the move also shows support for the team, the story adds.

"Revolution" has the strongest ratings, winning its 10 p.m. time period on Monday nights in both weeks of the new season and showing a big jump through delayed viewing, the story points out. Tuesday night comedies "Go On" and "The New Normal," meanwhile, have showed significant growth, Carter writes.

"Many series have started out quickly and faded, of course, which makes the NBC decision on Tuesday a risky one and vulnerable to second-guessing later," he adds.
