Ratings Winners Among Broadcast, Cable Nets in Election Night Coverage

“The American people have spoken, and the results are in,” TheWrap.com reports, focusing on ratings for Election Night coverage among the broadcast networks. “NBC has been declared the winner in the 2012 election.”

On the the cable side, "CNN took the presidential prize last night among the cable news networks, just beating Fox News’ coverage," Deadline.com reports, adding, "However, when it comes to the primetime hours of 8-11 PM ET, Fox News Channel hit an all-time viewership high with an audience of 11.5 million."

NBC’s coverage was down slightly from the numbers it delivered for the 2008 presidential election, TheWrap notes, citing preliminary numbers. But the Peacock Network topped its broadcast rivals.

“While the nature of election coverage renders all of the networks’ numbers more approximate than usual, NBC currently holds a commanding first place in the advertiser-cherished 18-49 demographic with a 4.6 rating/10 share — a 2 percent dip from the 2008 election — and in total viewers with 12.6 million,” TheWrap story reports.

Placing second was ABC, with a 3.8/8 in viewers 18-49 and 11.1 million total viewers. “The network took the biggest hit versus 2008 among the networks, dropping 18 percent in the demo compared to the Obama-McCain election,” TheWrap report notes.

Third-place CBS was the only broadcast network to post an increase over 2008, rising 8% to a 2.7/6 with 8.4 million total viewers.

“Fox came in fourth in ratings and total viewers, posting a 2.0/4 — a 9 percent drop from 2008’s preliminary numbers — and 5 million,” TheWrap report adds.

On the cable side,  the Deadline report adds, "CNN’s 7 PM-2 AM coverage of President Barack Obama’s re-election won in both total viewers and the 25-54 demographic. CNN had an average of 8.836 million total viewers over the night with 4.387 million in the 25-54 demo. FNC was close second with 8.708 million total viewers with 3.494 million in the demo. MSNBC came a distant third with 4.604 million viewers with 2.021 million among adults 25-54."
