A distrust of President Obama’s lead in the presidential election lasted late into the night on Fox News, leading to what The New York Times calls ” the most bizarre on-air encounter of election night.”

Karl Rove was the source of the conflict, with the conservative consultant insisting that the network should be more “cautious” about calling Ohio for President Obama, the story notes.

After a beat of silence, co-anchors Megyn Kelly and Bret Baier offered to get a number cruncher from the decision desk to talk about why they made the call, the story says.

“And so ensued the most bizarre on-air encounter of election night: a network anchor interrogating Arnon Mishkin, a member of the Fox News decision team and a respected voting analyst, forcing him and a colleague to defend their news judgment against Mr. Rove, one of the most powerful Republican fund-raisers and strategists,” the article notes.

Although Rove and other conservatives expressed doubt about the election’s results, many of them had become pessimistic about presidential hopeful Mitt Romney by 10 p.m., according to the report.

  1. I wonder if everyone at Fox was expecting some chicanery with rigged voting machines in Romneys favor to take place. Thus their unwillingness to call it to Obama too early.
