Video: Bob Costas’ Remarks About Gun Control on NBC Spark Debate

Dec 3, 2012  •  Post A Comment

Bob Costas sparked a debate Sunday night when he spoke in favor of gun control during halftime of the Cowboys-Eagles game, reports The New York Times.

His comments came after Saturday’s murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs starting linebacker Jovan Belcher, who allegedly fatally shot his 22-year-old girlfriend before shooting himself.

According to the Associated Press, Costas paraphrased and quoted extensively from a piece by Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock.

"In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today," Costas said.

Many people took to the Internet to criticize the broadcaster for expressing his personal views on a program aimed at entertainment, the AP notes.

Here’s a video clip of Costas’ on-air comments:

  1. The first ten amendments to the Constitution were intended to protect the public from their government. As a poster I once read said: The second amendment is to protect us against a government who disobeys the others. OJ didn’t need a gun. People use their own hands, knives, bombs, bows and arrows – whatever is convenient. Still better than abortion…

  2. So soon we forget. The roaring 20’s in Chicago. If we prevent law abiding citizens from obtaining guns, only criminals will have guns. Do you think, for a nano second that a criminal will surrender his guns id required by law to do so. Look at the evidence, more people are killed by automobiles than guns. I guess we should ban automobiles as they are deadlier than guns.

  3. Once again, a sportscaster proves why he is a sportscaster and not a newscaster.

  4. There are 270,000,000 guns in the US. The total of gun related incidents using an average of data from the government spanning 2001 to 2009 (and numbers are decreasing each year)including murder, self-inflicted gunshots, accidental shootings and miscellaneous incidents (including police shootings) is 26,989. That means .00962% of guns were involved in any incident. Considering that cops and hoodlums might contribute several incidents on the same gun – the number is even lower. Now consider that the 3 cities with the most restrictive gun laws are NY, Chicago and Washington. Obviously there is a cultural problem, not a gun problem.

  5. And once again, the mob targets the wrong guy. Costas was quoting FOX Sports columnist and former Kansas City Star pain-in-the-ass, Jason “I’ve never met a buffet I didn’t clean out” Whitlock. Please, by all means, direct all villagers bearing pitchforks, torches, tar & feathers in his direction. If he’s not at work, try the local McDonalds -they all have standing orders to keep a booth and 50 pounds of fries available at all times in case he waddles through the double doors.

  6. According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, a Browns employee committed suicide by hanging himself in an equipment shed at the team facility yesterday. Will Costas now want to ban ROPE?

  7. Um, NYC has the lowest crime rate per capita of any big city in the country.
What’s the murder rate in countries where guns aren’t so prevalent?

  8. Perhaps Mr. Costas would like to also prohibit spoons to solve America’s obesity problem.
