Dish Takes Out Ads Bashing CBS

Dish fired a new salvo in the battle over its Hopper with Sling DVR device, and the company took aim directly at CBS. Deadline.com reports that Dish took out full-page ads Sunday in a number of major newspapers touting the merits of the device and targeting CBS for pulling the plug on the prestigious CNET award that was initially set to be given to the device.

As previously reported, CBS, which owns the tech website CNET, stepped in earlier this month to prevent the awarding of the CNET Best of CES Award to the Hopper. CBS is suing Dish over the device.

Deadline reports: “In the ad, which first appeared on Dish’s website, the company says ‘CBS will go to any lengths to keep you from enjoying ad-skipping technology — even censoring its own writers and throwing out their decision to name Hopper “Best In Show.”’”

Since the CBS action on the CNET award, the controversy has become focused on journalistic integrity, the piece notes.

“CNET media writer Greg Sandoval resigned as a result of CBS’s decision to bar Dish from getting the award,” the piece reports. “In statement issued earlier this week, the network said it ‘has been consistent on this situation from the beginning’ and called the debacle ‘an isolated and unique incident’ involving ‘a product that has been challenged as illegal’ by CBS ‘and nearly every other major media company as well.’”

  1. Come on – everyone needs to grow up. There are plenty of channels that Dish chooses not to carry for financial reasons. That is not much different than the decision CBS made for financial reasons.
