Los Angeles TV Drama Production Plummets

Television drama production in Los Angeles posted the largest annual decline on record in 2012, reports Richard Verrier in the Los Angeles Times’ Company Town blog.

Production of one-hour dramas in the city plunged 20% last year, the piece reports. The numbers reinforce "concerns among industry officials that cost-conscious producers increasingly are taking their business to tax-friendly production havens in New York, North Carolina, Georgia and other states," Verrier writes.

Only 22 one-hour drama pilots were filmed in Los Angeles last year, making up only 29% of all pilots produced for the 2012 season. That’s down from 63% in 2007, the story notes, citing a survey from FilmL.A.

Among the beneficiaries are New York, which was home to more than six new network dramas in 2012, as well as Canadian cities such as Vancouver and Toronto.

”Sitcoms, which have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, saw a 53% jump in production activity last year, while production of reality TV programs dropped 12%, according to the FilmL.A. report, which tracks filming on streets and noncertified soundstages," the story notes.

  1. SURPRISE! High taxes do not encourage growth of the economy. (Unless you live in Canada where they are getting a lot of California’s business)
