In a high-profile case that became part of the national debate over gun rights and gun control in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, the Washington, D.C., Attorney General’s Office has announced that it won’t charge NBC News host David Gregory with illegally possessing a high-capacity gun magazine, TVNewser.com reports.

As previously reported, Gregory became the subject of an investigation after he held up a high-capacity magazine while interviewing NRA head Wayne LaPierre as part of a segment on gun regulations in late December. It’s illegal to own a high-capacity magazine while in Washington, DC, the story notes.

A petition was circulated demanding that Gregory be formally charged in the incident on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” as we reported previously.

The Attorney General’s Office said that while the law was broken, a prosecution "would not promote public safety.” The decision did not come "lightly or easily," it said, and the office chastised NBC for its initial "feeble and unsatisfactory" response."

A representative for "Meet the Press" said the empty magazine was shown for journalistic purposes, and said it had no further comment.
