One of the stars of the comedy series “A Different World,” which was a fixture on NBC in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has died. TMZ.com reports that Lou Myers, who played Vernon Gaines on the sitcom, died Tuesday at 77.

Myers reportedly died at the Charleston Medical Center in West Virginia after a heart-related emergency.

“Lou was hospitalized in December for pneumonia but released after New Year’s. He collapsed at home a few weeks later and was hospitalized again,” the story reports. “Lou’s heart stopped [Tuesday]. Doctors were able to revive him, but he fell into a coma and passed just hours later.”

Myers’ career included appearances on the stage and in movies along with TV. Among his film appearances were roles in “The Wedding Planner,” “The Fighting Temptations,” “Tin Cup” and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.”

“A Different World,” a spinoff from “The Cosby Show,” ran for six seasons on NBC, from 1987-1993. Myers joined the series in its second season and remained a regular for the rest of the show’s run.
