ABC Show Sinks to All-Time Low; New CBS Series Premieres to OK Numbers

CBS coasted to an easy ratings win over its broadcast rivals Tuesday night, even with a lukewarm premiere for its new series “Golden Boy,” based on Nielsen overnights.

ABC, meanwhile, took its turn among the broadcast networks watching their shows sink to all-time lows, as “The Taste” was the latest to receive that unwelcome news.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that CBS’s “Golden Boy” debuted to a 1.8 average rating in the key 18-49 demo, easily topping its competition in the 10 p.m. hour. The number improved on the 1.5 delivered by “Vegas” in the same time slot last week.

The rest of the CBS lineup was mixed, with “NCIS” dipping one-tenth of a ratings point from last week to a 3.4 in viewers 18-49 — still the top-rated show of the night — while “NCIS: Los Angeles” ticked up two-tenths to a 2.9.

CBS won big in the overall prime-time ratings, averaging a 2.7 for the night in 18-49, well ahead of Fox (1.7 average), ABC (1.7), Univision (1.5) and NBC (1.1). The margin was even greater in total viewers, with CBS way out front with 15.9 million to ABC’s 5.8 million, Univision’s 3.8 million, Fox’s 3.6 million and NBC’s 3.4 million.

The highest-rated non-CBS show on the night was the season premiere of ABC’s “Celebrity Wife Swap” with a 2.4 average in adults 18-49, ticking up one-tenth from last year’s premiere. ABC’s “The Taste” slid to a series-low 1.4, losing two-tenths from last week’s number. “Body of Proof” equaled the 1.2 it had a week ago.

Fox’s strongest show was “New Girl,” which rose one-tenth in the 18-49 demo to a 2.3. Back-to-back episodes of “Raising Hope” settled for a 1.5 and a 1.4, and “The Mindy Project” held steady with a 1.6.

NBC was paced by two episodes of “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers,” with both installments delivering 1.3 averages in 18-49 — even with last week for the 8 p.m. episode and down one-tenth at 8:30. Numbers eroded as the evening wore on, with “Go On” pulling a 1.1 (even with last week), “The New Normal” drawing a 1.0 (up one-tenth from last week) and “Smash” managing a 0.9 (even with last week’s series low).
